DATE: Victorian, c.1870
Cool Victorian brooch featuring a ruby, diamond, and cat's eye studded bug set 'en tremblant' to create movement when worn, giving the impression the bug is darting around. The term, literally "to tremble", describes the motion created by the trembler (essentially a spring made of thin metal wire). It's crafted in 18 karat gold and silver, with French control marks and a hidden safety chain attaching the bug to the brooch back. The wings are set with rose cut diamonds and natural rubies, with diamond eyes, ruby thorax, and cat's eye chrysoberyl abdomen.
