Vintage Retro pair of brooches. 18k gold, diamonds and sapphires. Made circa 1940. Exact origin unknown - possibly Italian. Unisex - suitable for a man or a woman. Gemological appraisal. Measurements: Weight is 16.8 grams. A little over 1 1/2 inches (39mm) across. 1.10ct sapphires. 0.56ct diamonds. Description : Wonderful design of these openwork, fanning and rounded shapes. A stylised white gold and diamond ribbon loops around a ring in the same glistening white combination of diamonds. Radiating from the circle of diamonds, are 5 gold feathery rays, like the tail of a peacock with a long stalk in the center, terminating in a bright blue sapphire. Outer wavy edges. The design beautifully makes use of the different colored materials - white, gold and blue and the open spaces between the parts, that are as eloquent as the glistening gems and metal, forming a dark background as a perfect foil and contrast. Hinged pins with tubular, secure catches. Individually, the brooches are beautiful. As a pair, they are as rare as they are stunning. Versatile - wear them alone/together; one alongside the other; one above the other; one facing up/one facing down. Endless combinations. Unisex - today, brooches like this are not the sole accesories for women. They can be as fabulously adorning on a man's attire. Marks and Metal: No marks. Gold was acid tested to ensure metal purity.
